abstract = "The use of remotely sensed data allows the monitoring of vegetated
areas. The dynamics of Vegetations Indexes can be related to
vegetation phenology and to meteorological data. The Conservation
Unit of Ibirapuit{\~a}, located inside the grasslands of Pampa
biome in Rio Grande do Sul was chosen as the area for a temporal
study with the objective of analyzing the vegetation
dynamics/phenology in times series of NDVI (from MODIS data) and
meteorological data (precipitation, temperature and relative air
humidity). Monthly averages of NDVI and meteorological data were
acquired from February 2000 to September 2009. These temporal data
were smoothed by a moving average procedure and tendencies and a
seasonal index for the series were estimated. Relationships
between NDVI and meteorological data were estimated by cross
correlation with time lag. The wavelet transformation with the DOG
mother function was used to generate the temporal power spectrum
of both data series and helped recognize inter and intra-annual
vegetation and climate dynamics. Peaks in NDVI responses coincided
with the time of grassland vegetation growing season. The
correlation between the data showed a fast response of the NDVI to
high levels of precipitation and air humidity. The data and
methods presented here made possible the seasonal analysis of
NDVI, and, by extension, the temporal dynamics of the vegetation.
Field data and a longer temporal series will complement a future
study of the same area.",
